CONGRATULATIONS to Angelica Bandayrel (she/her), first-year genetic counseling graduate student, who has received the University of Washington Office of Graduate Student Equity & Excellence (GSEE) Graduate Supplemental Award!

"I was born in the Philippines and raised in Houston, Texas. I’ve spent the past several years working as a Cytogenetic Technologist, where I developed a strong foundation in genetic testing and analysis. Over time, I found myself wanting to move beyond the microscope and connect with the people behind each sample.

That desire to bridge science and human connection is what led me to pursue a career in genetic counseling. I’m especially passionate about closing gaps in care for underserved communities. This commitment was shaped by my experience as a first-generation immigrant navigating complex healthcare systems alongside my family. Outside of the lab, I’ve been involved in advocacy work, including volunteering at Camp Phever, a summer camp for children with PKU, which deepened my belief in the power of community and education."

Congratulations again, Angelica!
